I guess you can look at this as more of a "giveaway" than a "contest." In a way, it's sort of both. Anyway, all you have to do is reply with a story of why you started collecting sports cards. In order to win, your stories must be at least 6 sentences or longer. Everyone is elgible to participate. The best story chosen will receive a random GU card. Once you reply with your story, please do not modify your post. Anyone found modifying their post will be disqualified from winning. This is to prevent anyone from changing their story. Also, only one story per person is allowed. This contest/giveaway will end on July 1st. Good luck!
Thanks, Collector

HI: The reason for me starting to collect hockey cards is that when I was 39 I had my first heart attack and then another and then another, so I can't work or do all of the other things I love to do like hunting and fishing. So the only other thing I really enjoy is hockey, I have had season tickets for the Soo Greyhounds for almost 20 years now. But when I started to collect I only had one interest and that was the Flyer's, from the days with Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Ron Hextall and all the other great older players. Therefore I thought that if I could get one of every Flyer that ever wore a flyer uniform and collect them I would be kept busy and I sure have! 8 binders packed full and a large wantlist out on the site some where! I started collecting hockey cards in 1990. I have always loved hockey and have cheered for the Oilers since they came into the league. When Proset and Upperdeck started making hockey cards I thought what the hell, I'll buy some packs. then one day a friend of mine wanted to get rid of her ex-boyfriends hockey cards that she still had in a shoebox. Didn't know much about hockey cards but I gave her $50 for the box because it had a few oilers in it. The cards were from 1980/81 and 1981/82 and in there was all of the Oiler greats' rookie cards. I had everyone but Gretzky and Fuhr so I thought I might as well try and get every Oiler card ever made. Getting the cards from the 80's was easy but the 90's are posing a bit of a problem. So many parallels and subset cards. I quit collecting Oiler cards in 1999 and now just concentrate on getting the cards from the 90's that I need. Have 3400+ cards in my collection and need about 600 to go, mostly expensive parallel's

Back in 2001 Is when I started collecting basketball.
Why did i start collecting basketball?:
My grandpa at the age of 83 had cancer.. in the process of his cancer we were at the hospitall all the time.. He was a huge collector! the day he died he left me something to keep forever.. His collection, I ended up selling it...As I made about 1 THOUSAND off it... 3 years later(2001) I went to a card shop because my kid wanted pokemon cards.. I looked around at the sports cards.. Before i noticed my whole dads collection sitting right there... Amazed as i was...I said how much for the collection They said 1K the same price I sold it for. I decided I needed to buy it back... After that i checked ebay started buying more and more and thats hiow i started collecting....

Very interesting stories. Psaw, you did modify your thread, but I'll let it slide, since there's not many who have posted, yet. Keep those replies coming in! By the way, the winner will also receive 10 "Elite" points.
Thanks, Collector

ok here go nothing... how i started collecting sports cards.. by TooTallToma back in the early days , when a pack of cards cost an nickle, and you got gum .. I used to buy an pack or two.. family moved and i lost an trunk full of cards.. then one day an friend was dumper diving and found some sports cards and ask me that question ... what it worth? well, i was out of the loop for a long time[1960-1990] and told him : i had to go buy an price guide to help him find out what he could get for them.. i bought them for five dollar , he wanted beer money.. so i was like stuck with these cards.. while looking up some of the cards, i notice some cards in the book were worth some big dollar .. not any of his.. maybe an quarter card or two so when he came buck in an few days later with more cards i ask him how much he wanted for them and he told me $5-10 for yup!! more beer money.. well ,that how i got back into collecting cards .. today i go to yard sale and the few hobby shop we have around here to buy some supply and pack of cards , some time i even go to walmart to buy series one 2006 topps , hey you never know , i just might get lucky and pull a alex gordon Full cards i also buy on the net [rarley] e-bay and such.. well, that my storie and i stick to it. now if you excuse me, a another friend has drop off some cards that i have to sort for him .. I started collecting baseball cards back when I was probably about 6 years old. I've always loved watching baseball, and my dad used to collect when he was younger too. Not exactly sure why I started, but probably more to be like my dad, and to have something of my favorite ball players. I still try to collect, even though my dad doesn't anymore. He does have all his cards yet, and I still drool over each one of them. I know one of these days, I will have a big collection (mine is already bigger than his - although newer) consisting of as wide a variety of cards I can find. Guess you could say I just love the sport, and would like to have something of every era/decade

I STARTED MY COLLECTION WHEN I FIRST TIME CAME TO USA AND I HAVE FOUND MANY STRANGE THINGS (CARDS) OF MY FAVOURITE PLAYER WAYNE GRETZKY. IT WAS 10 YEARS AGO AND NOW I HAVE BIGGEST COLLECTION OF HIM IN RUSSIA AND MAYBE IN EUROPE ABOUT 500 CARDS. IT'S TOO MUCH FOR RUSSIA WHERE WE DIDNT REALIZE THAT HOCKEY COLLECTOR COULD BE SO HAPPY WITH CARDS.
